Chapter 53 :
Anvaya's POV
I stilled, my breath faltering as the weight of his confession sank into me. For the first time, I felt the depth of his obsession, the consuming fire that shaped his every step. It wasnโt something fleeting or casualโit was carved into his bones, etched into his shadows.
And yet, I couldnโt help the confusion spiraling inside me.
Why me? Why now?
I looked at him, words slipping past my lips before I could stop them. โThen you wonโt keep me in the dark, will you?โ
The silence between us stretched, taut, until his gaze settled on mine with a quiet finality. His lips curved into the barest shadow of a promise, and he whispered, โI wonโt.โ
Before I could exhale, his hand tightened around mine. He tugged me gently, guiding me toward the next pillar. As we neared, it glowed, casting a red radiance that rippled across the floor like liquid fire.
My eyes widened, my steps faltering.
Paintings wrapped around the pillarโs surface, framed in ornate gold, but the images themselvesโunlike any I had ever seen. They werenโt merely art. They were memories given shape, dreams captured mid-breath.
The first painting stopped me cold.
A shadowed manโmasculine, dark, his form blurred at the edges as though he existed on the cusp of vanishingโheld a woman. But she was no ordinary figure; she was made of fire. Her body shimmered with strokes of red, orange, and yellow, her brightness so fierce she seemed ready to burst into sparks. His grip was desperate, clinging, as though if he loosened even for a second, she would scatter into the night sky.
I swallowed hard, stepping closer.
The second painting mirrored the first yet cut deeper. The same man and woman, bound in embrace, but now she was fading. Her fire scattered in wisps, painted with such sorrow it felt alive, tangible. His shadow clutched her tighter, unwilling to let go, and she too clung to him. Yet every stroke screamed of farewell.
Who were they? Why did they part?
My chest ached.
The third painting brought a shiftโtwo shadows, this time entwined. Flames wrapped around them, bright strokes of crimson and gold, binding them together as if in a final vow. A bond no fire, no force, could break.
I blinked rapidly, my breath hitching as I moved to the fourth.
Two hands, intertwined.
One, dark and masculine. The other, pale and slender, glowing faintly beneath a bluish light. Their fingers tangled, simple yet profound. No sorrow in this one, only quiet belonging. A dreamlike aura surrounded it, as if the hands existed outside time, away from the worldโs cruelty.
I couldnโt look away.
The next painting drew me further in.
Two faces, their lips hovering mere inches apart, not yet touching. The manโs shadowed face leaned close, and the womanโher fiery glow softenedโmet his gaze with eyes full of unspoken hunger. The intimacy wasnโt in the kiss itself but in the waiting. The tension of two parted mouths aching to close the distance. Their eyes locked, carrying a story of yearning so raw it bled through the canvas.
I shivered.
And thenโtwo more.
The one above burst with hazy brilliance. A couple running, blurred like a fever dream. The woman in a flowing white gown pulled the man behind herโdressed in a black suitโas they ran across what looked like a beach. The horizon gleamed faintly, but the details blurred, dreamlike. Escapism lived in the strokes, a desperate attempt to flee the worldโs chains. She was his escape, he was her solace, and together they carved out a rebellion.
The last painting was perhaps the most haunting.
A dance.
The couple, both clothed in black, stood at the center of chaos. The womanโs hand rested on his shoulder, the other intertwined with his. His palm pressed firm against her waist. Around them blurred a rushing crowd, streaks of faceless figures under a cityโs night. The wet pavement reflected fractured colorsโred, yellow, green. Yet the two of them danced as though none of it existed. A pocket of peace carved in frenzy. Intimacy born not of touch alone, but of quiet defiance.
My eyes stung with unfallen tears. The paintings werenโt simply beautiful. They carried fever-dream haze, a vintage ache. They breathed. They lived. And they unraveled me.
I turned to him, voice trembling. โTell me.โ
That was all it took.
He caught my hand, pulling me close before turning me gently, his arms circling my waist. His breath brushed my ear when he spoke, low and almost dangerous.
โIโm that little shadow. The fourth in the family. A boy who existed only as a silhouette, invisible in plain sight. People saw me, yes. But they never acknowledged me. Thatโs why my body doesnโt appear in the paintings.โ
I stilled, his words clawing at me.
โDavid always won medals,โ he continued, voice heavy as though reliving wounds. โAnd Iโonly taunts. He carried the Oberoi name with glory, trophies, perfect grades. I wanted something elseโdance, art, paint. But that made me filth. A stain.โ
My heart squeezed painfully.
โBut why?โ I whispered. โDidnโt you haveโฆ money?โ
He chuckled, humorless, brittle. โWe were aristocrats. Wealth was eternal, pride untouchable. We might perish,ย but our name would not.โ
His eyes darkened. โBut pride is crueler than hunger. When parents despise their own blood, siblings follow. I wasnโt even allowed Davidโs old clothes. I didnโt deserve the belongings of someone so โgreat.โโ
He inhaled sharply, as if steadying himself. โMy palettes were smashed against walls. Brushes broken. My mother cracked my knuckles with rulers until I bled. My fatherโโ He almost falteredโas if scared to do so, yet, it was there, his jaw tightening. โHeโd drown me in bathtubs filled with paint and water. Said, these colors are stains on the Oberoi name, and youโll drown in them as punishment. My mother only watched.โ
Tears burned my eyes, my throat locking.
How could parents be so cruel?
I had thought mine the worst. But hisโhis was hell.
โI was spared only on the precipice of death,โ he whispered. โThey didnโt want me gone. No. They wanted me aliveโto suffer, to wear the shame like skin.โ
His voice broke into silence.
I trembled, words I once spat at him ringing in my ears like venomous echoes.
โYouโre just a weakling hiding behind control, obsession, and darkness. A weakling who canโt survive without his shadows.
I had said that. I had wounded him with it. And now, hearing his truth, guilt cut into me like thorns pressed deeper with each heartbeat.
โSo monster I became,โ he murmured.
A chill ran through me. Those words carried not confession, but consequence.
โThey called me weak in the dark,โ he continued. โSo darkness became my weapon. And now, it is my empire. Those who once laughedโkneel before me now.โ
His voice shifted, softer, almost reverent. โBut thenโฆ one night, she came.โ
I froze.
โA girl, in golden hours. A gown flowing around her, hair unbound. She came into my dreams. I didnโt know why. Didnโt know who she was. But she came anyway.โ
His tone grew distant, dreamlike. โI saw her eyes through the haze, glimmering under golden rays. Her hair veiled her face. She wandered forests and I followed without reason. The moon carried three facesโone me, the others her essence. She held tiger lilies in her hands, my birth flower. Then she offered her hand, and I walked with her. To a place beyond this world.โ
I couldnโt breathe.
โHer world was gold, pure, untouchable,โ he said quietly. โAnd meโI was a shadow. Impure. But still, she came.โ
His grip on me tightened. โAnd then she became fire. She happened. We happened. She burned me, yet I embraced it. She saw me when no one else did. She held me. Danced with me in crowded streets. Ran with me on unseen shores. And you know who she was?โ
My chest constricted. My heart whispered an answer my lips refused to form.
โYes,โ he breathed. โItโs you.โ
I gasped. My knees weakened.
Noโฆ how could that be?
How had I walked into his dreams before I even knew him? How had I existed in his shadows without knowing?
My head spun, questions exploding like firecrackers. Had he planned this? My entry into his life, my vulnerabilities, my dependence on himโwas it all orchestrated?
I stumbled, but his arms tightened around me, steadying me. My chest heaved, breath erratic.
โNo,โ he murmured. โI didnโt know it was you. Not ten years ago.โ
My eyes widened. โTenโฆ years?โ
His nod was almost imperceptible.
โIโve known you for five.โ
The air left my lungs in a gasp.
โFor five years, you came only in dreams,โ he said. โAlways the sameโyour eyes beneath the last sun, tiger lilies in your hand. We danced, we walked, we lived. But I never saw your face. Only your silhouette.โ
My pulse thundered.
โAnd then,โ he whispered, โyou came. In reality. Five years later.โ
โWhere?โ My voice barely formed.
โAt the hospital. You were rushing to the practical room. I was there for a deal with Mrs. Lavanya. In that hurried second, you caught my eye. And my dreams changed. You no longer came as a shadow in gold. You came as flesh. As part of me. Dressed in black, in whiteโyou held me, you led me, you made me see again.โ
I stared at him, my mind unraveling. He had never spoken like this before. Never peeled away his armor. But now, he wasnโt a ruler, wasnโt a monster. He was the boy who had bled beneath paint water, who had been denied sunlight.
โYou mirrored my turmoil,โ he said. โThatโs when my fixation began.โ
His eyes darkened. โBut my parents saw. They saw me slipping. They found you. Learned I was drawn to someone outside their control. Someone not powerful enough in their world. So they gave me a choice: marry Viola, orโโ
โOr what?โ My voice trembled.
โOr theyโd have killed you.โ
I whimpered, tears spilling.
For me, he had surrendered again. For me, he had caged himself once more.
โBut why?โ I whispered. โWho am I to you?โ
He lifted his gaze, and his words broke me. โYou are my sweet sin. More than life. More than freedom. Losing you was never an option.โ
My tears fell freely now.
โSo Viola came,โ he continued bitterly. โThe girl my brother wanted, maybe even loved. But she wanted power, controlโeverything my parents desired. She was their perfect leash for me.โ
Rage boiled in my chest. His parents had crossed every threshold of cruelty, chaining him, crushing him, molding him into something he was never meant to be.
I wanted to touch him, soothe him, promise him he could be himself with me. That I would never leave. But my own fear tangled insideโcould he love me? Truly? Or was I only his fire-born shadow?
His voice dropped, almost a murmur. โDavid lost Viola because of me. David and Viola had been good friends since childhood. That girl in the paintings was Viola beside David.
He had feelings for her but she had her aim straightโmoney, power and control. So she got me. She knew how my family treated and so, I became her leash.
And so, he turned to you. Wanted to take you from me, out of revenge. Give you everything he knew you liked just to break you. Breaking you meant breaking me. But I held you. In my darkness. Until you were mine.โ
His arms tightened, his body pressing steady against mine as my knees buckled.
โNo one,โ he whispered, โno one and nothing is worth your life. So I gave mine instead.โ
I could just listen to him silently. My words were long lost because his sacrifices in my name, while I remained unbeknownst to it, had already written the collision of our fates at a point.
I was lost of words. But still I asked. One last question. Just one.
"Can I trust you with this? That this isn't just a story?" I looked into his eyes. Just looked. But he could read that all I wanted to hear was a 'yes'. And he wouldn't lie.
Would he?
He left a low breath.
"Ask yourself."
"I have. Now I'm asking you."
"You've stood with me long enough to not trust me now. Just do it for the last time." He said softly.
"I'll treasure it for a lifetime."
I didn't know what to feel or understand from this. My feelings for him had gone deeper, but this new revelation had silenced the very last thought in my head.
And in that moment, as his truth enveloped me, my body slumpedโnot from weakness, but from the unbearable weight of love and darkness entwined.
And still, he held me.
